Several years ago, Sudbury committed to being a Fairtrade Town and many churches committed to being Fairtrade Churches. Now is the time to review purchases made by our church and by each of us as individuals. Fairtrade tea, coffee and bananas are widely available. Chocolate and other goods can be found in places such as Oxfam’s shops.

The person responsible for Fairtrade and Traidcraft in each church is asked to contact the secretary of the Sudbury Fairtrade Group, Sara Merritt (saraljpx@gmail.com ) with a view to highlighting Fairtrade Fortnight (February 27th to March 11th 2023) and for mutual support now that Traidcraft plc has gone into receivership.

I am writing as the new Secretary of the Sudbury Fairtrade Group, which as you know works to promote fairtrade in the town and maintain Sudbury’s status as a Fairtrade Town.
For farmers and workers around the world, Fairtrade means workers’ rights, safer working conditions, and fairer pay. For shoppers it means high quality, ethically produced products.

Nearly ten years ago, Sudbury Fairtrade Group steered Sudbury through the process of becoming a Fairtrade Town.
The group was led at the time by Revd John Boardman and supported by Sudbury Town Council and many local businesses, organisations, churches and schools.

Sudbury is required to renew its status as a Fairtrade Town in Spring 2023. In order to retain our status, certain conditions have to be met. Among them is a declaration from Churches in the town that they use Fairtrade goods where possible and are known as Fairtrade Churches.

Suffolk Association of Fairtrade Towns On-line Conference Saturday 9 July.
The conference is open to all those with an interest in Fairtrade in Suffolk and we will be linking up live with SAFT Patron Patrick Kaberia in Kenya. Patrick has been in touch to say how much he is looking forward to meeting old friends and talking to new allies in the Fairtrade movement.
