CLASSIFICATIONS – A review of the first concert in the series

Friday 29 May at St Mary’s Church, Creeting St Mary

There can’t be many touring string sextets that play music ranging from Abba to Vivaldi in a single concert. Classifications, introduced and led by Jeremy Hughes, did exactly that for a capacity audience in the church at Creeting St Mary last Friday night, on the first night of a series of concerts billed as Light Classical Concerts in Suffolk Churches.

The six musicians played an energetic mix of musical styles which delighted the audience. A fiery Czardas, and some laid-back Gershwin made for a nice balance with the mainstream classical music by Vivaldi, Mozart and Elgar, all elegantly and beautifully played. The band’s enjoyment of the music-making was obvious to see and hear.

This new group has a new take on the classics, crossing a few boundaries with lightness and humour. All in all it is perfect for a summer evening’s entertainment.

The series continues at Barnham (12 June), Woodbridge (19 June) Cavendish (26 June), St Gregory’s in Sudbury (3 July) and Laxfield (10 July). Tickets (£8.50/£6.50) are available from Ipswich Tourist Office and local vendors. For more information visit www.bpa-live.com .
