A congregation of around 150 assembled at St. Gregory’s church on 18th October for a service led by the young people of Eden’s, the town’s Christian Youth work. It was composed of people from many local congregations under the auspices of Churches Together in Sudbury and District. The worship was led by Eden’s group Sanctifi and songs old and new were sung lustily. There was a short drama, written and performed by the young people, but it was not easy for some of the congregation to hear, or to see projected words.
The address was delivered by Matt Gill (Rev. Simon Gill’s son) and he was a shining example of how to use a microphone. His diction was clear, his thought process and preparation was evident, his delivery was well paced and lest the congregation become restless he thoughtfully arranged for lollies on sticks to be handed out. This was a very original ploy which some other preachers might consider. Some of the slower suckers were left with a half consumed lolly when the final hymn was announced.
We were all entertained to a cup of hot chocolate and a doughnut, provided and served by the folk from Eden’s, at the close of the service.
All in all, this was a very enjoyable evening where young and old were enabled to worship together to our mutual benefit and understanding. It is my fervent hope that it can be repeated in the not too distant future.
