Sponsored Canoe for Christian Aid

Martin Sparks writes: a BIG ‘thank you’ from Syd and myself for those that sponsored us on our canoe trip from the Quay to Bures on the 30th July, we raised in total £480 which been quadrupled by the EEC.

Malcolm adds: The three people from St Gregory’s raised a further £245. I have  yet to hear the amount raised by the five from Norfolk. Many thanks to all concerned.

In six canoes, twelve people paddled from Sudbury to Bures on Saturday 30 July: seven from Norfolk (including Eldred Willey, Senior Coordinator for Christian Aid in East Anglia); Rebecca, Peter and Ed from St Gregory’s; and Syd Platt (Sudbury Baptist) and Martin Sparks (CCF) who are both active with Men in Christ, Sudbury.

The money raised supports a project for sustainable agriculture in Burkina Faso, West Africa, and will be quadrupled by a special grant from the European Union. Gift Aid adds a further 25%. The project will help 88,000 villagers in the arid northern part of the country. It will enable them to put in treadle pumps and irrigation channels, and develop crops which are resistant to drought. It will also provide a solar drying plant so that they can market mangoes.
